What is Nick Carraway's role in the novel? Consider Nick's father's advice in chapter one: "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." Does telling the story from Nick's point of view make it more believable?
· He is the connection between everyone and everything. He is also the emotional connection.
· He is the good honest person among a lot of bad. I think that telling the story from his point of view, makes it more believable, nick is an honest person. · His father’s advice is true and thoughtful; his father was very wise and knows what he is talking about but most likely had to learn from his own experiences. This is what Nick also has to do, he took his father’s advice to an extent but this is a time of learning in his life and he will have to make decisions on his own and see where they take him. àWe have learned that you have to make decisions on your own and it’s your own experiences and what you learn from them that shape your life and build your character. Just like Nick learned from his own decisions and they shaped him to the honest person he is.
"In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores." Pg. 1
This quote showed he was an honest man even if his honestly sometimes made him disliked by some.
What is the American Dream? How does Gatsby represent this dream? Does the novel praise or condemn Gatsby's dream? Has the American dream changed since Gatsby's time?
· The American Dream is different for every person, some people want love, some want happiness, some search for wealth, but I think everyone wants all of these to an extent. · Each person’s American Dream is molded by their personal experiences. Gatsby represents the American Dream by his search for love. He is a true romantic who would do anything for Daisy. He is also like most Americans because he desires wealth, but not for selfish reasons. He knows that Daisy would not even considering being with him when he was poor so he tries to build his worth and make himself worthy in her eyes. · These tie back to his dream of love with Daisy which would make him extremely joyful and would complete his American Dream. The American Dream changes for different people, not for different time periods.
àWe have learned that the American Dream is different for every person and their past life experiences mold what they want to achieve. My American Dream may not be the same as anyone elses, but it is just as worthy of pursuing.
“He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed way, as though in her actual and astounding presence none of it was any longer real.” Pg. 91 This quote represents his drive to become “The Great Gatsby” in the eyes of Daisy. He was willing to change his lifestyle to become what she wanted him to be. Everything about her represented his American Dream her wealth, her beauty, her status and her lifestyle. In the end it was just a fake reality to him.
Why did Nick become involved with Jordan, and why did he break off the relationship?
· He is attracted to her at first which draws him in, and then Jordan becomes an American Dream of his in some ways. I think he wanted someone to start a life with and someone to love. He had fun with her and found her exciting and engaging. · She represented a future for him. · But he broke off the relationship because he found her to be superficial and shallow and in times of hardship she thinks only of herself and he was looking for something deeper.
"I couldn't have talked to her across a tea-table that day if i never talked to her again in this world." Pg. 155
This quote is when he realized that nothing mattered to her except herself and he realized he didn't like her anymore, in fact he was repulsed by her.
